This summer, the Kaskö Museum has a jubilee year, so you should visit the Kaskö Museum. The museum is open every day from 12.6 to 11.8 and offers a lot of new things to experience in honor of the anniversary. The museum association turns 50 years old and thanks to the association, the collection of valuable objects that started at the beginning of the 20th century led to the birth of the local museum in the 1980s. Renström's property on Raatihuonekatu (Raatihuone street) consists of a 1,300 square meter plot of land and a house built in the 1850s along the street with 13 rooms. In the yard, there is now also a so-called fisherman's hut, originally built in 1839. The hut came a couple of years ago as a donation to the association that built it - log by log. This summer, the door will be opened to the public, who will be able to wonder how the fishing family got along in a small space, where the fisherman also made and repaired e.g. their fishing gear.
A bourgeois home at the turn of the 20th century and history of Kaskinen are displayed in the Kaskinen Museum. Get acquainted with the long history of the city through museum objects illustrating seafaring, old time fashion, the work of local artists and past times.
The museum is situated in an old merchant house built by ship-owner, industrialist and merchant Carl Daniel Rhenström in the middle of the 19th century. The citizens of Kaskinen have donated the artefacts, which offer various views into the history of Kaskinen. The furniture and artefacts compose different milieus and entities in the museum, such as the interior of a fisher’s cottage, a classroom and a ship-owner’s office. Even an entire kitchen interior from the beginning of the 20th century has been donated to the museum.
One of the museum’s pearls is a collection of textiles. It consists for example of an extensive collection of hats and costumes, that used to belong to the bourgeois families in Kaskinen. One such item is a silk wedding dress from the year 1822.
There are several rarities in the museum, that used to belong to Peter Johan Bladh (1746-1816), the supercargo of the Swedish East Indies trading company, industrialist and commercial counsellor.
Johan Bladh, who was elected thrice to the parliament, also acted as a ship-owner in Kaskinen and moved to the Benvik mansion in the north side of the city. He turned the Bladh mansion into an example farm, where new ideas were applied, and built ships for his trade flotilla, which sailed to many foreign harbours. He was also a commendable natural scientist. The Finnish Grand Duchy often resorted to Bladh’s financial expertise. Bladh was after Anders Chydenius probably the most important financial intellect in Finland during the period of the Swedish rule. Among the rarities of the museum are a silk sheet that used to belong to Bladh, a silk stocking and a silk wallet.
There is a notable collection of art by the local artists in the museum. Among them can be mentioned artist and magistrate Thure Georg Sundell (1864-1924), whose paintings often depict Kaskinen and the archipelago seen from outside the city.
The drawing room with its ceiling paintings dating back to the end of the 19th century is worth seeing, not to mention the interesting vitrine containing thrilling objects. Those include for instance a coffee cup, which president Kekkonen used on his visit to Kaskinen in 1975. The cup still remains unwashed!
One of the coziest spots in the museum during the summertime is the punch veranda with a view to the garden. Rehnström was known for the punch made in his distillery. The garden used to stretch out all the way to the Satamakatu (Harbour road). There is a cannon from the year 1795 in the garden.
