The building on Otto Malmsgatan, where Nygård's workshop was located, was built in 1938 by Atte Holmström. In the 1970s, the building was taken over by Rogen Nygård, after whom the workshop was named. Nygård’s workshop had both a repair shop and car sales on the premises. The city owns the property, which is used as a warehouse and a repair shop. Alerte rented the workshop until the turn of the year 2018-2019.
In 2007, the Finnish Heritage Agency made a statement about Nygård's workshop, whose fate was a little unclear at the time. The agency considered that the building is worth preserving and that the interior should also be preserved. Renovation of Nygård's workshop was estimated at 500 000 euros. The city financed the renovation with 475 000 euros. The Ministry of Education and Culture also granted 150 000 euros to the project.
Tempus has roughly 270 square meters of exhibition space, which is slightly larger than one of the museum's former exhibition premises in the Tobaksmagasinet. Roger Wingren's architectural firm planned the makeover of the workshop and created a modern and functional exhibition hall in the old car workshop without removing the historic layers. Tempus has movable partition walls that make the exhibition room flexible and good ventilation that makes it possible to exhibit old artefacts.
The exhibition hall got its name Tempus after a competition where Pirkko Hautamäki’s proposal won. The Latin name, which means time, works well in both Finnish and Swedish. The name Tempus describes the museum's work. The museum preserves time, researches time and presents its interpretations of time.
In Tempus, the museum will annually produce its own exhibitions that focus on local history from the 20th century. The exhibition hall will also host art exhibitions by visual artists or exhibition themes with a strong connection to the area.
Tempus was officially opened on the 3rd of May 2023. The venue's first exhibition At the Summerhouse presented summerhouses and life at the summerhouses along the coast from Kokkola to Kristinestad. The exhibition focuses on 100 years of summer residences in Jakobstad between the years 1850-1950, with an emphasis on Alholmen and Östanpå. At the Summerhouse was produced in collaboration with the Ostrobothnian museum.
